Ararat Rural City Council has launched a parking blitz this week after residents and local businesses raised their concerns on excessive parking in town.
The move is part of a wider Council initiative to reduce motorists parking in free 2-hour spaces all day.
Chief Executive Officer Dr Tim Harrison said the patrols have been prompted in response to increased complaints from the community.
“Managing traffic flow, access to parking and safety around town to achieve a welcoming environment for residents and visitors is a council priority,” Dr Harrison said.
“Earlier this year, Council removed paid parking and implemented free 2-hour parking in the CBD to help encourage visitors and residents to visit town, support local businesses and spend their dollars locally.
“In response to increased complaints from the community on motorists overstaying their welcome -- council officers are patrolling the CBD to ensure parking restrictions, access and safety concerns are being addressed.
“Along with increased monitoring, officers have been actively working with local businesses to ensure they’re advised of the parking restrictions and complaints from the community.”
“Right now – vehicle parking spaces in Ararat are in high demand due to increased visitation and holidays around the corner – particularly, around our shopping and commercial precinct,” he continued.
“A steady turnover of parking spots gives us all a chance to shop and support our local traders. I’d like to thank those in the community who are adhering to parking limits – it’s important that we work together to ensure everyone has fair and equitable access to the available parking.”
Council started actively monitoring the Ararat CBD this week and will continue to do so throughout December.
